The Olympic Flame RestaurantOlympic Flame
There is a little Greek gem in Eau Claire called the Olympic Flame. If you love gyro sandwiches, give it a shot. Their menu is small, but the quality of their gyro makes me return again and again. On the other side of the large glass windows, you'll see tables with blue and white checked tablecloths. Framed travel posters (most of them from Greece) adorn the walls. The sounds of Greek music greet you as you walk up to the counter to order your meal. Yes, they have burgers. Last I remember, my son loves them. Perfect item for those of us with families. If you're lucky, you'll see Lampros the owner waiting tables. Even having owned the restaurant for many years, he pitches in on the busy nights. Always friendly, he'll make you feel right at home. Although they have a small amount of American dishes, I highly recommend the gyro dinner. If you're not sure how to pronounce gyro (it sounds like yee-roh), just order a 'dinner'. It comes with french fries or a small Greek salad. The fries are always hot and crispy; you should try them. Yes, I've checked out the bathrooms (something I always do). Down a long hallway towards the back, it's a bit disconcerting at first. The bathrooms are a bit older, too and rough around the edges. Vintage items on the walls complete the decorations. Despite a bit on the rough side, the bathrooms are clean and have always been stocked. The Olympic Flame is affordable even on a student budget (I had a small addiction to gyros during one semester). The sandwiches are perfect for lunch, but if you have a big appetite, get the dinner. The dinner really piles on the meat and french fries. AND, for takeout, their sandwiches are wrapped up in tinfoil, securing everything until you get back home. There have been a few places that have tried to open up fast food gyros in Eau Claire -- but they've never held a candle to Lampros and his Olympic Flame. |
