State Theatre -- Eau Claire Regional Arts Center
No Do-Overs
I attended the Minnesota Ballet's production of Sleeping Beautyat the State Theatre last night.
Mom and I love this kind of stuff -- and so did a lot of other women and girls. Between parking, our tickets, and all the other fun stuff -- it was a hit.
My car scooped the loop a couple of times before settling on a parking spot. It occurred to me how much easier it is to park here than in the Cities. Bonus! We only walked about a block and a half.
You can't miss the State Theater on production nights -- it's lit up. As we walked up, a violinist was playing on the sidewalk, case open. I love this kind of spontaneous fun.
Since I had printed out my tickets on-line, I breezed through a lot of the hubbub at the door. They cut my tickets off the sheet for me and voila! We were in.
Tip:
If you're watching theatre or ballet, don't sit in the front row.
We couldn't see the feet! Move back to at least the 5th row. (Don't let the computer pick your seats!)
When you get to the State Theatre Eau Claire early, you have time for treats. We each sampled a small glass of ChocoVine and listened to the pianist. It sounded like something out of vaudeville.
This is the thing to take your little girl to -- or to attend just because you had childhood dreams of becoming a ballerina. Take someone who loves dance.
I noticed a few little girls dressed in their best princess costumes. Enchanting.
The State Theater is art deco on a grand scale. It needs some refurbishing, but is still fun. If you like architecture and décor, you'll find it interesting.
It occurred to me many times throughout the performance that these dancers have no do-overs. There's no computer enhancement, no stopping if you have a problem, and no stunt doubles. Wow.
When Sleeping Beauty awoke with a kiss and looked around, I got chills. Then, she saw her Prince Charming, and I got more chills. Would she slap him for kissing her? (I swear, at the time it seemed likely)
A fun evening -- in this case it was a ladies night out.

Ok, me and mom do hang out on a regular basis. If you knew how cool my mom was, you'd hang out with her, too.
So, we went to a production of the play with all the hats... Yes. My Fair Lady. LOVE it! Yes, we wore our hats. :)
This is real entertainment. If you're super into it, they sometimes have auditions. Stretch your fun factor -- try out. That's how you have good adventures.
The next play on my list... The King & I. I love the movie. So does mom. Should be totally fun to see as a play.
BE there. FEEL the music. SEE real people dancing, singing, playing music, and saying their lines. This is where it all happens.
Going to live theatre productions at the Eau Claire State Theatre is like live reality TV shows -- without the TV cameras. There are no do-overs.
